Land reclamation is the process of rehabilitating lands affected by human activities or natural events, and often involves characterizing a site to understand conditions and performing an interconnected suite of engineering and ecological services, such as sediment and erosion control; stream restoration and stabilization; and revegetation, to return land to beneficial use – all while balancing costs and regulatory expectations.

Whether returning mine land to pre-mining conditions or repurposing a closed industrial facility for natural or recreational use, Trihydro provides comprehensive land reclamation services that start with understanding project goals.

Regulatory Support

REGULATORY SUPPORT

Trihydro provides reclamation permitting support for numerous types of sites, developing permit applications that properly account for air and water quality regulations and establish site-specific land reclamation plans. Each site is unique and a misstep in regulatory compliance can impact the project schedule resulting in lost time and increased costs. We have experience working with local, state, and federal agencies to prepare permit applications and/or modifications that address overlapping requirements from multiple agencies to meet operational needs.

Site Characterization

SITE CHARACTERIZATION

Before land reclamation activities begin, site characterization is a crucial step in understanding the extent to which the environment has been impacted. Site characterization will involve evaluating sediments, soils, surface water, and groundwater, and may also involve inventorying infrastructure. At this stage, potential locations for waste repository sites may be identified. Site characterization efforts may also involve coordinating with affected landowners, land management agencies, and mineral claimants to describe investigation and reclamation activities.

Landform Grading

LANDFORM GRADING

Landform grading is an umbrella term for multiple approaches that can be used to reshape land to its native topography. Creating a more natural landscape improves aesthetics and allows the land to function in alignment with geo-specific climatic and watershed characteristics. Landform grading incorporates multiple channels and ridges that result in numerous, small sub-basins. The broken topography reduces the length of overland flow and conveys the flows into defined channels. Not only does landform grading reduce erosion, but it also enhances aesthetics and encourages biodiversity.

Sediment and Erosion Control
SEDIMENT AND EROSION CONTROL

Land disturbances or natural events such as forest fires often produce sediment, or displaced soil, which can contain metals and other hazardous materials. When landforms become subject to erosion, sediment can travel offsite, creating water pollution concerns and risks to human health and the environment. Sediment can also clog streams and damage water distribution systems. To help control erosion and manage sediment, there are numerous tactics that can be employed onsite as part of land restoration activities.

Stream Restoration and Stabilization
STREAM RESTORATION AND STABILIZATION

Stream restoration and stabilization efforts help recreate natural systems, which in turn promote improved habitat and ecosystem functionality. Trihydro's natural landform design experience is complemented by our in-house hydrology, hydraulics, and stream design capabilities. We have designed new channels and restored existing streams. We have designed stable channels to route stormwater around disturbed areas and to re-establish native stream patterns.

Revegetation
REVEGETATION

Revegetation activities help reclaim disturbed land by addressing soil deficiencies so that plant species can be reintroduced. In turn, when chosen and managed correctly, plant life improves soil conditions, creating a positive feedback loop for vegetation. Trihydro’s ecologists and reclamation specialists have extensive knowledge in soil quality analyses, revegetation techniques, seed mix selection, weed mitigation, and erosion control methods.

Oldham Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation
Stigler, Oklahoma

Oklahoma's coal mining legacy has left thousands of acres of abandoned mines that pose public safety risks. Trihydro developed a plan to address hazards at a former strip mine in eastern Oklahoma, prioritizing geomorphically stable design principles and considering environmental, historical, and archaeological impacts to restore 45 acres of land.

Wapello County, Iowa

Trihydro assisted the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Division of Soil Conservation, Mines, and Minerals Bureau in developing reclamation plans for a former coal strip mine, using geomorphically stable design concepts to resolve polluted drainages, eliminate public safety hazards, and mitigate disturbances to wetland and Waters of the United States.
