  • EMERGING CONTAMINANTS: 1,4-DIOXANE, TRICHLOROPROPANE, AND PFAS
Emerging contaminants are the subject of fervent research and discussion within environmental compliance circles. Emerging contaminants are chemicals that are not currently (or have been only recently) regulated and for which there are concerns regarding their impact on human or ecological health.
A DEEPER DIVE INTO THE PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES (PFAS) PROBLEM
Per-(and poly)fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of emerging contaminants that have upended our understanding of impacted-site management. Unique challenges of PFAS are related to several factors including their complex chemistry, persistence in the environment, mobility, and toxicology.
PERFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES (PFAS):CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN WATER TREATMENT
What are perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and why are they grabbing headlines? PFAS refers to a class of emerging contaminants that have challenged our understanding of water treatment. PFAS are persistent, highly mobile, and are often released as complex mixtures that may include hundreds to thousands of individual compounds. Furthermore, PFAS are ubiquitous in our society, with widespread use in products such as firefighting foams, stain- and water-resistant textiles, food packaging, and other consumer goods. Production and use of these products, coupled with widespread industrial uses for PFAS-containing materials, have resulted in groundwater and wastewater streams impacted with PFAS.
